The structure of the Writing section of the IELTS test:

One of the sections of the IELTS test is the writing section. IELTS writing itself has two types, academic writing and general writing.

Also, IELTS writing skill has two tasks, task 1 is different in academic and general modules. In the following, we will introduce you to the structure and format of each of them.

1- The structure of the Academic Writing section:

Academic IELTS test is suitable for candidates who intend to continue their studies at undergraduate, graduate and higher levels in English-speaking universities.

IELTS academic writing skill tasks:

Task 1: In task 1, a diagram or table is given to the candidate and he is asked to describe it in at least 150 words.

Task 2: In task 2, the candidate is asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The answer to both tasks should be formal.

Academic Writing test format: The academic writing skill of the IELTS test has two tasks that must be completed.

Timing: The duration of the academic writing test is 60 minutes.

Number of questions: The number of questions in the academic writing test is 2 questions.

How to answer: Answers must be written completely on the answer sheet (IELTS writing sheet). Notes and bullet points are not acceptable as answers. If the candidate writes the answers in the question book, since the question book is not corrected by the examiner, the candidate will lose the marks for that section.

2- The structure of the General Writing section:

The IELTS General exam is suitable for candidates who intend to continue their studies in English-speaking universities or life and work at lower levels than the bachelor’s degree.

The IELTS General Writing section has a more personal and everyday style than Academic Writing. In this way, after completing a table or diagram, the candidate must be able to prove his ability to provide a solution to a problem.

IELTS General Writing Skill Tasks:

Task 1: In task 1, a title is given to the candidate and he is asked to write a letter (personal, semi-official or official) according to it. In this letter, request information or explain a situation.

Task 2: In task 2, the candidate is asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The answer to this task can be personal.

Format of the General Writing test: The General Writing skill of the IELTS test has two tasks that must be completed.

Timing: The duration of the General Writing test is 60 minutes.

Number of questions: The number of questions in the Writing General exam is 2 questions.

Types of writing test questions:

IELTS writing test has two tasks in both academic and general formats. task1 is different and task2 is similar in both tests.

1- The structure of task1:

Task1 academic writing test:

In Task 1 of the IELTS Academic Writing test, the candidate is asked to describe some visual information about types of graphs, tables, processes and comparisons in 150 words and in 20 minutes, and in a formal style on the answer sheet.

Pay attention to the following in task 1:

Answers should not be less than 150 words as it will result in penalty to the candidate. Given that candidates are not penalized for writing more than 150 words, they should remember that a longer answer to Task 1 may mean less time is allocated to Task 2.

Candidates should not spend more than 20 minutes on Task1.

The answers should not be out of topic because the candidate will lose the Task Response and Task Achievement score due to the irrelevance of the answer.

Answers should not be duplicates as this will result in the candidate being severely penalized for plagiarism.

Number of questions: number of questions task1 is one question.

Candidates should write their answers on the answer sheet.

Skills required for task 1 writing test: task 1 question is to check and evaluate candidate’s ability to identify information related to graphs and tables presented in academic and official style.

Task1 General Writing test:

In Task 1 of the IELTS General Writing test, the candidate is asked to write a letter with 150 words in 20 minutes, usually describing the lifestyle or work in a foreign country along with the problems that may occur to each person.

Pay attention to the following in task 1:

Answers should not be less than 150 words as it will result in penalty to the candidate. Given that the candidate is not penalized for writing more than 150 words, it should be noted that a longer response to Task 1 may mean that less time is allocated to Task 2.
